This is the important year where we get ready for Grade 1. Each learner's strengths and needs are recognized and met in an individual way.

Social & Emotional Targets:

  • Encouraging independence.
  • Must be able to express emotions.
  • Take responsibility for their actions.
  • Must be proud of their work and be able to talk about it.
  • Must be able to execute three instructions consecutively.
  • Be able to retell a story.
  • Be able to play without being pushy and be able to share.

Is your child ready for school?

Can your child do the following:
1. Get dressed and undressed by themselves
2. Can they tie and loosen their shoes?
3. Tie his/her shoe laces
4. Able to write their own name
5. Able to complete a colouring book
6. Can they cut in a straight line
7. Tear and stick
8. Retrace a shape like a circle, triangle, etc.
9. Can he/she complete a puzzle on their own

1. Can your child speak Afrikaans/ English fluently and make the correct pronunciations?
2. Your child should not speak in "baby language"
3. Give an instruction once and your child listens
4. Your child needs to be able to greet other people

1. Can he/she identify shapes that do not fit?
2. Can your child remember what they see? For example: Show the child various shapes and then we remove one shape.
3. He/she needs to be able to draw a solid straight line
4. Your child needs to be able to draw a straight line between two other lines.

1. Can your child determine the difference between certain words like what is a cat vs. a car
2. Let your child stand with their back facing towards you. Ask the child to repeat the following letters: b,v,w,r ens.
3. Your child needs to be able to repeat the sounds you provide. Exactly the same with numbers.
4. Can your child remember what they hear? For example: ask them to repeat a set of numbers to you.
5. Start with 3 numbers. Forx example: 4,9,1 and gradually increase the total of numbers your child needs to repeat to you just by hearing.
6. Can your child repeat a short sentence?

1. Your child needs to be able to kick, bounce and throw a ball
2. Able to balance on one leg by themselves
3. Jumping up and down and alternating their legs
4. Jump over something
5. Is your child able to jump rope?
